Cleveland’s New Christmas Spirit

A local business is providing the region with their own Christmas spirit. Cleveland’s Portside Distillery is releasing their ‘Christmas Spirit’ rum in a limited run of 500 bottles. Revelers around town will no doubt be warming up by the fire with the Cleveland-made rum and eggnog.

The Plain Dealer has the scoop. An excerpt is below.

“It turned out very well,” Malz told The Plain Dealer. “It’s a beautiful color. … I think it will be something we will carry every year. It’s a nice seasonal.”

Malz says the rum is “made from 100 percent cane sugar. We infused it with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and honey.” The honey, he added, comes from Blue Pike Farm, an urban farm on Cleveland’s East Side that recycles Portside’s spent grains from its brewing operation. The beneficiaries of those grains are chickens, Malz said.

“We tried to keep it local,” said Malz, who added that he expects the rum to be “gone well before Christmas.”

Malz and his partners are in the midst of getting their space ready for a permanent tasting room, dining room, kitchen and gift shop. Opening is scheduled for spring.
